The Stakes Are Higher In Federal Court

Robert C. Bonsib has practiced in the federal trial and appellate courts in Maryland and the District of Columbia since 1983. From 1983 to 1987, Robert C. Bonsib served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland. In that capacity, as a federal prosecutor, he handled many federal criminal investigations and trials, and also represented the United States government before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.

Since 1990, when Robert C. Bonsib entered private practice, he has devoted a significant portion of his practice to defending individuals, businesses and other entities under federal investigation or charged with criminal offenses in the federal courts. The practice of criminal defense in the federal court system is significantly different than the practice of criminal defense in the state courts.

Not only are there differences in the rules of procedure, but a significant difference also exists in the manner in which federal investigations are conducted. Federal prosecutors also deal with the targets of their investigations differently than state prosecutors. A highly skilled federal criminal defense attorney will also have a thorough knowledge of the federal sentencing guidelines, as well as the many federal criminal statutes with mandatory minimum sentences.
